STOW — Sheetz, currently closed for a major remodel, is expected to reopen in mid-June, a spokesperson for the convenience store and gas station said on Feb. 28.
Located at 950 E. Steels Corners Road, on the corner of Steels Corners and Hudson Drive, Sheetz No. 296 was razed shortly after it was closed on Feb. 11, said Jennifer Donahoe of the public relations firm Planit Inc. of Baltimore, Md.
The original store, which opened in late September 2000, was about 4,500 square feet in size with a car wash and gas pumps. Donahoe said the new store will be approximately 4,900 square feet and the car wash and gas pumps are going to be upgraded.
The new store will have a dining area with enough seating for approximately 30 people as well as two TVs, she said. The old store did not have indoor seating. The new store will also have a drive-thru, another feature the old store lacked.
In addition to building size, the new store will likely increase the number of people on its payroll.
"Prior to the remodel, there were nine full-time and 10 part-time employees as well as a manager," Donahoe said. "The new store is estimated to have additional positions, [but] the total new positions open will depend if any of the part-time employees increase hours."
Last summer, Brian Soyka, permits manager for Sheetz, told the city’s planning commission the company wants to bring the Steels Corners Road store in line with its current branding which emphasizes its food offerings.
"We want to get that store looking current to what our new stores look like, with more of a restaurant-style architecture and more emphasis on food rather than gas," Soyka said.
