TALLMADGE — The Old Schoolhouse is history.

The former Tallmadge Middle School which stood on property adjacent to City Hall was demolished Feb. 28. Razing the school was recently added as a component to phase three of Testa Enterprises’ Town Center development, which is under way on the site. Joel A. Testa, president/chief operating officer for the Testa Companies, says the building had "deteriorated to the point" it was "unsafe and beyond repair."

"We cut out the date stone and saved it," Testa said, adding, "The rest of the building just crumbled. It was in really bad shape. The bricks turned to dust as it was coming down."

Construction of a medical office building is under way as part of phase three at 60 North Ave. A 34,900-square-foot medical office building is taking shape; it’s supposed to house two tenants, a family practitioner and a DaVita dialysis center. Plans to renovate the 8,535-square-foot schoolhouse for use as a daycare fell through.

According to Testa, there aren’t any concrete plans yet for use of the space formerly occupied by the school. "Depending on what happens with the remaining lots we may need it for parking," Testa said.

The Tallmadge Middle School stopped using the site in 2008 when the new Tallmadge High School opened. The original school at that location opened in 1911.

Background

The first phase of Tallmadge Town Center centered on the construction of the main roadway, infrastructure and a four-story building known as The Village at Town Center at 100 North Ave. The first floor features commercial space. The second and third floor house age-restricted senior apartments. Loft condos for sale and lease top the structure. Phase two was the construction of a one-story, 4,000-square-foot commercial and retail building at 80 North Ave.

There is the potential for a fourth phase of the development. "We are certainly hopeful that there will be a phase 4," Testa said, "but unfortunately, until it happens, we can never say definitely."
