An Aurora police officer has been arrested on aggravated assault charges after an alleged road rage incident in Florida.

Joseph LaPerna, 48, is said to have brandished a handgun at another driver while traveling on Interstate 75 on Saturday morning shortly before 11 a.m., according to the Florida News-Press.

LaPerna was stopped by Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Collier County deputies and taken to the Lee County Jail. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to a Collier County public information officer. The News-Press also reported that LaPerna was charged with improper exhibit of a firearm.

LaPerna is currently in custody and being held on a $5,000 bond, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office website.

Aurora Police Chief Brian Byard could not be reached for comment.
