MACEDONIA — Officials say a 72-year-old woman was taken by Metro Life Flight for treatment and another woman was taken to Akron City Hospital by rescue squad Friday around 2 p.m. following a two-car collision at the Route 8/Highland Road intersection.
Fire Lt. Paul Celinski said the 72-year-old was in “pretty bad shape” when she was evacuated by air, but did not have further details. He said the other woman was “ambulatory” but asked to be evaluated. The two women were the only occupants of their vehicles.
Celinski and Police Lt. Vince Yakopovich said an orange-and-yellow van driven by the woman taken to Akron City Hospital was heading south on Route 8. It struck a Ford Escape driven by the 72-year-old, which was turning west onto Highland Road from Route 8 northbound. The van struck the SUV broadside in the intersection, they said.
Further information on the women was not immediately available.
Police stopped Route 8 southbound traffic south of Highland Road while dealing with the crash scene, and halted Route 8 traffic in both directions while the medevac helicopter landed and took off.
The crash took place at around 1:40 p.m. and the road was reopened just before 3 p.m. Firefighters responded from all three Macedonia-staffed fire stations.
Police are asking anyone with more information about the crash to contact the department at 330-468-1234.
