The grocery and merchandise retailer Meijer has announced it is hiring more than 900 employees for three northeast Ohio supercenters in Stow, Avon and Mentor. The retailer announced the first greater Cleveland-area stores are expected to open in late spring, expanding its presence after more than 37 years in the Buckeye State.

Company officials have said the 192,000-square-foot Stow outlet, located in the Stow-Kent Shopping Center on Route 59, will employ about 250 workers. The space was formerly home to a Big Lots and four smaller retail outlets.

“Foundations are set, floors are poured, and the walls are up at each of our new Northeast Ohio stores, so every day we’re a little bit closer to opening our first three locations in greater Cleveland,” Regional Vice President Tom Wilson said in a release. “The opportunity to begin hiring for hourly positions and put together customer-focused teams is the next step …"

Meijer purchased its portion of the plaza from Stow-Kent Associates for nearly $3.79 million in December 2016, according to Summit County property records.

Founded in 1962, Meijer opened its first supercenter in Ohio just outside of Columbus in 1981. The retailer claims to be the first to offer fresh produce, meat and dairy as well as a wide selection of general merchandise and customer-focused services. The retailer currently employs about 10,000 at 39 supercenters throughout the state and at a distribution center in Tipp City, the release said.

The full- and part-time positions available include team leaders, cashiers, cake decorators, customer service, receiving clerks and meat cutters. Potential candidates can apply online at https://jobs.meijer.com/.

The Stow location, as well those in Avon and Mentor, will feature fresh produce, meat and dairy delivered seven days a week, as well as apparel departments, pet supplies, toys, electronics, a garden center and a pharmacy.
