Hudson Community Education and Recreation will celebrate 20 years of the Explorer Zone Before and After School Child Care Program with an open house Oct. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at East Woods School.

Parents, past Explorer Zone students, school employees and community members are invited to the school to see the program in action, take part in an adult/student activity and enjoy a piece of cake to celebrate this important event.

Explorer Zone, established in 1998 as School Age Child Care, was developed to allow working parents a place within the Hudson City School District to have their child cared for from after school until they finished their work day. Originally offered at Evamere Elementary only, SACC hosted approximately 25 children per day.

Today, the program, now known as the Explorer Zone, is home to approximately 130 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade who are supervised at East Woods School from 6:45 a.m. to the start of school and from after school until 6 p.m.

Explorer Zone staff members escort students to and from each Hudson elementary school to East Woods School, where the Explorer Zone is located. The Explorer Zone is staffed by HCSD employees with backgrounds in child care who take pride in providing and fun and enriching environment for the students.

At the Explorer Zone, students enjoy breakfast and healthy snacks, outdoor and indoor play time, games and art activities, computer time and even special guests performances and events. Explorer Zone students also take part in service activities that have sent cards to veterans, food donations to the food pantry, dog and cat food donations to the humane society and knitted blankets to the homeless.

In addition to offering Explorer Zone activities and care, the Explorer Zone staff members also transport students from each elementary to HCER after school activities like flag football, soccer, baseball and lacrosse, as well as violin, acting, chess, science and engineering and chorus. HCER’s Explorer Zone can assist as many as 500 students per school year. It continues into the summer by offering Before and After Camp Care for HCER’s many day camps, enrichment camps and sports camps.
