The new principal at Walker Elementary School is Ann Bartley.

Twenty years ago this week it was reported that Jeff Kendrick, a 1993 Canton South graduate, graduated from the University of Akron. He was on the Dean’s List with a bachelors in computer science. Jeff is the son of Janet and John Kendrick and is working as a computer program at BRT in Akron.

Twenty-five years ago this week the Meischiemer Elementary School Reunion was held on May 16. There were between 90-100 who attended the school from 1830 to 1948 and turned our for the covered dish dinner. The oldest student attending was 84-year-old Nelson Haney. It was a very nice day and everyone had an enjoyable time and a highlight of the afternoon was listening to Don Mattevi’s "Joyful Sounds" Band. Don was also a student at the school.

Sunday Brunch for Father’s Day at Foltz Center is June 17, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The cost is adults $12, children $6, kids two and under free. The menu will consist of ribs, fried chicken, baked scrod, sides, a variety of breakfast favorites, including made-to-order omelets and waffles, salad bar, fruits and desserts. Coffee, tea and soda also included.

The June 19 AARP meeting will be held at the Town Café, not at the Foltz Center, 11:30 a.m. You will order from the menu.

East Canton Community Festival is Friday, June 8, 5-9 p.m., and Saturday, June 9, noon until 9 p.m.

Congratulations to Nathan and Brooke (Snyder) Ray on their marriage last week. Nathan, a member of the U.S. Navy, is the son of Mary Ray and Arby Ray. Brooke is the daughter of Kent and Wendy (Offenberger) Snyder.

Congratulations to Zachary Smith, son of Alan and Loreen Smith, who was chosen to receive the 2018 Lori Sickfoose Award. He also received five other special awards at the Sandy Valley Middle School Awards Assembly.

Rita (Cascioli) Zwick was recently honored at the Region 17 Sweet Adeline Contest. She has been singing with Sweet Adelines for 50 years. Her Aunt Florence and the late Neva Locker started her on this wonderful journey of music back when she was 17 years old and still in high school. Here's wishing you many more years of doing what you love.

The grand total from the recent fundraiser held at the Sandy Valley Eagles for the Magnolia Fire Department was more than $11,000. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our local fire fighters and their new building.

2018 Little Cardinal Football and Cheerleading sign-ups will be held Saturday, June 2 from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, June 16 from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, June 30 from 5-8 p.m. All sign ups will be at the Wellness Center. The Sandy Valley Cardinals boys and girls basketball staffs are offering prospective elementary school boys and girls the opportunity to participate in 3 supervised basketball camp sessions, June 4-6. The sessions will consist of skill development, playing games, and skills competitions each day. Cost for participation is $25 and will include a camp T-shirt and a basketball for each camper. Current 2nd and 3rd grade students will meet from 9:00-10:15 a.m. Current 4th and 5th-grade students will meet from 10:15 – noon. The East Sparta Artisan Market is the second Saturday in June-August from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the East Sparta Community grounds. The first event of the season is the Civic Association's annual market. There will be crafters and vendors, local bakers, and lunch available for purchase. Vendor fees go directly to the Civic Association to help pay for updates to the community building. Please come and support the community and have fun at the same time.

The 80th annual East Sparta Homecoming will be held June 21-23.

Sandy Valley baseball held a movie night on the high-school field, where they watched Field of Dreams.

A benefit will be held for Jimmy Darby on Saturday, June 16 from 5-8 p.m. at St. James Hall. On March 28, Jimmy was injured when 25,000 pounds of steel I-beams pinned him against his semi truck. He suffered a concussion, multiple abrasions, and two broken arms. Unfortunately, there is no workers compensation or disability insurance. He will be unable to return to work for six months.
