In a "spinoff" of its recent "Potterfest" events, Main Street Kent announced Friday that downtown Kent businesses will host the first "Wizardly World of Kent" on July 28.

"Currently, event sponsors include Acorn Alley, College Town Kent, Portage Community Bank and Off the Wagon, all of whom are excited to support this spinoff event after tremendously successful Kent Potterfest events in 2016 and 2017," said Main Street Kent Executive Director Heather Malarcik.

Malarcik has said the organization is trying to be careful not to violate copyright laws associated with the "Harry Potter" movie franchise.

"Wizardly World of Kent" will be an opportunity for wizard and magic fans of all ages to come together and enjoy downtown Kent, complete with costume contests for kids and adults, live music, crafts, potion classes, photo booths, vendors and face painting. Many downtown businesses will participate, offering crafts, activities and special menu items in the spirit of the event. The Hometown Bank Plaza, Dan Smith Community Park and other public areas will be home to a variety of activities and entertainment throughout the day.

Ben Woods, who owns Sugar Rush with his wife Liz, said he’s looking forward to the event. "Potterfest" took place a few weeks before the downtown candy shop opened in 2017.

"We’re very excited about participating," he said. "We’re happy to participate in anything that brings folks to downtown Kent."

Although the "Wizardly World of Kent" is a new event, he said he believes it will be well attended.

"Whether you call it ‘Potterfest’ or ‘Wizardly World,’ I still think it’s going to be a fun activity," he said. "I tend to think it’s probably going to be successful."

He said he believes the new event will be carried by the popularity of "Potterfest" and other downtown festivals.

"It seems to me that it’s been going on long enough that downtown Kent and the stores in the area have a reputation of being welcoming in these sorts of events," he said.

He said he hasn’t heard any guidelines on how much Potter can be put into "Wizardly World of Kent" activities.

Vendor applications will be available Feb. 1.

Sponsorship opportunities are available and will offer exposure for interested businesses. For information about this and volunteer opportunities, contact Main Street Kent at 330-677-8000 or
