Aurora -- A 79-year-old Aurora man was charged Dec. 6 with 24 counts related to sexual involvement with minors, according to Aurora police.

Dr. Mark B. Shaffer Jr. was indicted by a Portage County grand jury Dec. 6 on one count of kidnapping and two counts of rape, both first-degree felonies, 11 counts of gross sexual imposition, which are third-degree felonies, and 10 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, which are fourth-degree felonies.

Shaffer is being held at the Portage County Jail on $1 million bond, according to court records.

The investigation unfolded Nov. 28 when Aurora police officers assisted U.S. Postal Inspection Service inspectors in serving a federal search warrant to Shaffer at his Aurora home, according to police, who said the investigation resulted from an on-going probe by postal authorities into alleged distribution of child pornography.

While conducting a search of the residence, police said numerous video recordings of suspected child pornography were found.

During a followup interview, police said Shaffer told investigators that for several years he has engaged in sexual activity with children. After the interview, Shaffer was charged with one count of gross sexual imposition of a victim less than age 13.

Shaffer was arraigned Nov. 29 at the Portage County Jail, where bond was set.

Other postal inspectors carried out a search warrant Nov. 28 at Shaffer's medical office in Bainbridge Township.

One of the victims identified by Shaffer lives in Kent, so Kent police detectives interviewed the victim, police said, and Shaffer was charged Dec. 4 with the rape of a child under age 13.

On Dec. 6, the case was presented to the grand jury, which handed down the 24-count indictment.

Court records did not list an attorney for Shaffer.

Police said the case is under investigation and additional charges are pending.

Although Shaffer's activity occurred in multiple jurisdictions over many years, according to police, the Aurora Police Department is coordinating the investigation.
