Parents: Dan and Brenda Tousley
School activities: Miniature Bridge Building Team, Interact club, Latin club, co-president of the science club and a member of the cross country team.
Subjects taken: Enrolled in a selection of honors courses as well as post-secondary courses at the University of Akron. Participated in the manufacturing and pre-engineering academy through the Six District Educational Compact since her sophomore year and worked in a lab in the polymer science department at the University of Akron during her senior year.
Community service/involvement: Member of Northampton United Methodist Church, participating in youth group, small groups, Tuesday night community, vacation Bible school and Daughters of the King. Volunteered at Happy Day School, a school for children with developmental disabilities for more than six years. Completed her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. For her project, Marissa completed a sensory garden, donated science supplies, wrote science lessons meeting the state of Ohio's science standards and hosted a community event, in order to benefit the students at Happy Day School. Also traveled to Clemson University the summer before her senior year to participate in a two week Materials Science and Engineering Summer Research Program.
Awards: National Honor Society, and has received several scholarship offers from community organizations and universities.
Future plans: Will attend Alfred University in New York in the fall to study Materials Science and Engineering. This summer, she will intern in the Polymer Science Department at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.
