Christ Community Chapel in Aurora has a goal of packing 108,000 meals for Feed My Starving Children, an international organization fighting global hunger.
On Aug. 24 at the church, which is located at 252 N. Chillicothe Road, hundreds of volunteers will pack the meals in three shifts, according to Lisa Jones, the outreach coordinator for the Aurora branch of Christ Community Chapel which also has a location in Hudson.
"Traditionally, it’s my understanding in the last couple years we’ve been pretty good about staffing our shifts," she said.
She said volunteers are still needed for the two afternoon time slots.
"Our goal is to get around 175 volunteers per shift," said Jones. "It’s a massive effort in terms of the number of volunteers we have. You can volunteer your time or make a donation."
In addition to packing 108,000 meals, Jones said the chapel hopes to raise $24,000 in cash donations to support Feed My Starving Children.
"That’s to cover the cost of the meals," said Jones of the cash donations.
Feed My Starving Children provides bulk food which volunteers will pack into individual meal bags, which the organization then distributes around the world, according to Jones. She said she’s not sure precisely where the food Christ Community Chapel has packed in the past has ended up, but she said the organization sends it to areas afflicted with famine, refugee centers or other areas with widespread hunger problems.
"They have packing days all over the country," she explained. "A big semi pulls up the day before packing. All the ingredients that go in those little packs are on pallets. World hunger is something I think we can all come together on."
She said volunteers, who need to be at least five years old, spend their shift measuring ingredients and filling meal bags. The meals include a protein and several other ingredients, often including rice.
"Once everybody put their component in, the bag is then vacuum sealed and weighed," said Jones. "It’s very precise; it’s a slick operation how they do it."
Volunteers come within the Aurora community, including the chapel, Aurora United Soccer and more organizations. Others come from around the region, including Hudson’s Christ Community Chapel congregation.
