Longtime Woodridge head baseball coach Denis Dever was inducted in the Greater Akron Baseball Association Hall of Fame Sunday at St. George Antiochian Orthodox in Fairlawn.

Dever graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1987. He was the captain of the Black Tigers’ wrestling and baseball teams during his senior year.

Dever earned his bachelor’s degree in education while majoring in history and minoring in physical education at the University of Akron. He achieved his master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove (Detroit) College in 2004.

Currently, he teaches American history, contemporary studies and the career-based intervention program at Woodridge High School.

Dever’s coaching career began at Falls where he served as the varsity assistant wrestling coach for four years. He has been at Woodridge High School ever since.

Dever has coached football at the varsity level for 21 seasons, serving in many roles including offensive, defensive and special teams’ coordinators.

Dever has been the head coach of the baseball team for 20 years. During that span, his teams have won nine league championships, 10 sectional championships and four district championships.

The Bulldogs have been regional runners-up twice during Dever’s tenure. His current overall head coaching record is 370-197 (.654 winning percentage).

Additionally, Dever’s teams have finished four times in the top 10 and six times in the top 20 in the final state coaches poll. More than 20 student-athletes have played on the collegiate level since he became Woodridge’s coach.

Dever has been named Coach of the Year by Record Publishing Co., now known as GateHouse Media Ohio. He also has been named conference Coach of the Year nine times by his peers.

Dever has served as a state poll voter for the Ohio Baseball Coaches Association for 12 years and helped create the Portage Trail Conference All-Star Game. In 2017, Dever was voted into the Northeast Ohio Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Dever lives in Cuyahoga Falls with his wife Jennifer. They have two adult children, Maggie and Alex.
