June 24, 2007 -- Jacob McWhirter of Tallmadge returned to Circleville Raceway Park for the first race of the Kids1st Karting Series. This series brings some of the best Cadet Junior Sportsman racers from Ohio and Pennsylvania to three World Karting Association tracks.
Consistency was the key to Jake's race day. Jake drove the Victory Racing/Brown Derby Roadhouse #7 Cadet to a second place finish in the first heat after starting from the outside pole. In the second heat he drove from the back of the field to secure a solid third place finish. These solid runs resulted in Jake capturing his first Kids1st pole.
The feature race was classic Cadet Junior Sportsman. Jake led a tightly contested first lap around the .7mile, 10-turn track. As lap two completed Jake led a four-kart group that quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the field. Lap five saw this lead group drop to three karts as a slower kart loomed ahead. Jake cleared the slower kart at the start of lap six and the race became a two-kart duel for the last two laps.
Jake and the current 3rd ranked Cadet driver in the country saved their best for last as both drivers ran their fastest lap on the last lap. These two karters shot down the long back straight, nose to tail at over 51 mph. As the first kart in the draft Jake was unable to hold off the charge as they entered turn seven. The battle continued through turns eight and nine. Jake made his final move to the inside on the last turn, but came up .149 seconds short at the finish line. In a classic show of sportsmanship these two young drivers gave each other a thumps up on the cool down lap.
While disappointed in not winning, Jake knows he gave one of the best karters in the country all he could handle on this day. As he received his second place trophy he stated that this was the most fun he has had racing.
Jake and Victory Racing return to Barberton Speedway on July 1 looking for his fifth checkered flag of the year.
Jacob congratulates his Tallmadge Minor A Little League White Sox on winning the season championship and wants to thank Coach Pratt and Coach Coffman for a great year of fun and instruction.
He thanks his sponsors " Brown Derby Roadhouse, McWhirter & Associates, Markernet " XS Energy Drink, Seckinger Insurance Agency, The Chapel, Polymer Valley Chemicals and Redmon Funeral Home.
