set for June 1
The Catholic Commission of Summit County and Call to Renewal of Summit County will sponsor a legislative breakfast with the members of the Summit County delegation to the Ohio General Assembly June 1. The public is invited to attend at 7:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St. in Akron.
A panel will present several issues and invite responses from the delegation. Issues will include state budget priorities, especially regarding health care and the Housing Trust Fund, as well as payday lending, TANF, and the death penalty.
"Our organizations are hoping that this is the start of this delegation meeting a couple times a year as the delegation from Summit County in order to find common ground for the good of Summit County," stated event organizer Karen Leith. "With the growing poverty of residents, it is important to look at our budget priorities."
Cost of the event is $10 and reservations can be made by May 30 by calling 330 535-2787 or e-mailing Ann at email@example.com.
Church to host
Angel Food Ministries
The Tallmadge First Church of God will serve as one of the newest host sites to participate in the Angel Food Ministries program.
Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief to communities throughout the U.S.
The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Ga. and has grown to serve as many as 500,000 families per month across 32 states.
There are no applications to complete or income guidelines. The program is open to "anyone who eats."
The only requirement to participate in the program is to place an order for the food during the specific order period each month.
This is done by going to the church and placing a prepaid order for the food.
Payment may be made in the form of cash, cashiers check or money order. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system. Orders are picked up at the church on the last Saturday of each month between 10 a.m. and noon.
Angel Food's groceries are sold in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box (17-plus items) at $25 per unit, usually consisting of six to eight meat items, as well as canned and boxed items. Each month's menu is different than the previous month with an average retail value of approximately $60.
Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week, or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is the same one would purchase at a grocery store.
Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork that may be purchased after the purchase of a basic unit.
Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or specialty boxes an individual can purchase, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere.
Tallmadge First Church of God is located at 464 Northeast Ave.
