The Greater Cleveland Chorus captured first place at the Regional Sweet Adelines Chorus Competition in April at Cleveland Music Hall. As regional champions they will advance to the International Competition, which will take place Nov. 4 through 8 in Honolulu, Hawaii. They will be competing against 34 other Sweet Adelines regional winners.Leading Greater Cleveland Chorus to victory was master director Jean Flinn of Cuyahoga Falls. Flinn has been the director of the Greater Cleveland Chorus since 1994. In the Sweet Adelines organization, Flinn is a master director, certified music arranger, approved candidate judge in the music category, a Sweet Adelines international faculty member, and a music education team member for Region 17. She also is a music educator for the Akron Public Schools. Flinn and her husband, Doug, have three children: Melissa, Ryan and Kelley.The Greater Cleveland Chorus is one of 14 Sweet Adelines International choruses that participated in the Lake Erie Regional Competition. These choruses represent Lake Erie Region 17, which includes portions of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.Four quartets from the Greater Cleveland Chorus: The pjjs, Worth Waiting 4, Dolce, and TGIF, also competed in the contest against 16 other Region #17 quartets. TGIF took first place and will represent Region 17 in Calgary, Canada this fall, for International Competition. Members of TGIF quartet are JoAnn Wilson, tenor; Marilynn Schroeter, lead; Tracy Bule, baritone; and Deb Ferenc, bass. Another quartet from the Greater Cleveland Chorus, B.L.A.K. Velvet, also will represent Region 17 in Calgary after placing 11th at the International Competition last fall in Las Vegas, Nev.The Greater Cleveland Chorus numbers more that 65 women who share a love of music and singing a cappella four-part harmony in the barbershop style. The chorus holds weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays at 7:30 at the Independence United Methodist Church, 6615 Brecksville Road, in Independence. New members are welcome. The Greater Cleveland Chorus has taken first place at four regional competitions and has competed in three International Competitions in Nashville, Tenn.; Indianapolis, Ind.; and Las Vegas, Nev.
