The Aurora boys cross country team placed 32nd with 744 points in the 42-team race at the Spartan Invitational Saturday at Boardman High School.
Defending Division I state champion Hudson won the competition with 104 points. North Allegheny (Pa.) finished second (177) and Massillon Jackson (178) took third.
Although the Greenmen were a bit overmatched against some quality Division teams, Aurora head coach Laura Bell-Peters was pleased with her team’s effort, particularly the freshmen.
"There were some great performances in spite of the heat," she said. "I am impressed with our freshman boys. They might be smaller, but they are not backing down. It’s fun to watch them compete."
Uniontown Lake sophomore Nathan Moore won the 356-member race with a time of 16 minutes, 5.7 seconds.
Freshman Matthew Singleton led the Greenmen with a 66th-place clocking of 17:51.3.
Rounding out the top five for Aurora were sophomore Noah Harrison (131st, 18:24.3), freshman Andrew Ploskunak (150th, 18:32.1), senior Robert Taylor (178th, 18:49.5) and junior Samuel Siedel (242nd, 19:25.9).
"Sam is working really hard and has stepped up to be a team leader," Bell-Peters said. "I am impressed by his efforts. Matt and Andy also are working really hard."
