Two Hudson senior tennis players’ careers came to an end at a Division I district tournament Thursday at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron.

The Explorers’ doubles team of David Tullett and Sam Yurak lost to Mayfield’s duo of Kevin Ng and Yukon Wong 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of district play. With the loss, Tullett and Yurak were eliminated.

"We were close to being in the match," Hudson head coach Tim Morgan said. "We were down 4-2 in the first set and we needed that game.

"We weren’t able to play our best. It was a little bit of wanting it too much and our nerves getting in the way.

"The other team had some talent and they were able to pick up their level. They had good serves and we had a hard time returning."

Tullett and Yurak finished third in sectional play earlier in the month in Akron after rallying from a 5-1 third-set deficit in their quarterfinal match.

Yurak reached district play in doubles for the second consecutive year. He finished with 19 wins in 2018.

Tullett, who played second singles throughout the season, won 22 matches.

"It didn’t end the way we hoped, but each of them played four years and contributed as freshmen," Morgan said. "They kept getting better and their chemistry was great. They showed good leadership for the team.

"We’re humble in victory and proud in defeat."
