Last year, the Tallmadge baseball team captured its first state title in 15 years.

Could a repeat be in the works for the Blue Devils this season?

They’re off to a good start.

Top-seeded Tallmadge earned a commanding 11-0 victory over ninth-seeded Canton South in an Akron Division II sectional title game Wednesday at Dave Young Field.

The game was called after 4-½ innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

With the win, the Blue Devils earned a date with fourth-seeded Marlington in a district semifinal contest, which is scheduled for Monday at Canal Park in Akron. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

The Dukes defeated fifth-seeded Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 11-8 to advance.

Right-hander Zach Boyd scattered four hits over five innings to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Rich Eyre had two doubles and three RBIs and Seth Gergely added two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for Tallmadge, which finished with 10 hits and one error. Canton South had four hits and one error.
