With mixed results at the Suburban League Swimming and Diving Championships, Twinsburg has plenty of fuel to finish the season strong.
The Tigers boys and girls teams each finished sixth overall out of eight teams at the Suburban League National Conference Championships at the Ocasek Natatorium at the University of Akron Saturday.
In addition, the Tigers hosted the diving portion of the meet at the Twinsburg Fitness and Aquatic Center Thursday.
This winter, the Twinsburg girls squad amassed 184 points in the meet as Hudson (517.50) and Brecksville (421) dominated the action. North Royalton was third at 251 points.
In boys action, the Tigers totaled 198 points. Hudson edged Brecksville 493-474 for team honors while Stow-Munroe Falls was third (268).
"The performances were all over the place," noted Tiger veteran head coach Kirtis Huelsman.
A year ago, the Tigers placed fourth in both boys and girls action.
"Some (performances) were season best, others were near the best, and some had a difficult time," said Huelsman.
"Either way, we have a better idea on how the team will respond to certain levels of rest as we near the end of the season," explained the fifth-year mentor.
Senior Sam Giardino placed well for the girls as she touched fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle race and in the 100 free.
Giardino had a time of 25.45 seconds in the 50-yard race. In the 100-yard race, she registered a time of 56.84.
Junior Colin Martin finished third overall in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.65 seconds.
The Lady Tigers' 200 free relay placed fourth with a clocking of 1:51.13 behind the efforts of junior Katie McCoy, junior Angela DeFabio, junior Allison Porach and Giardino.
Huelsman saw his boys place fourth in the same 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.59. The cast had Martin, junior Mitch Govang, junior Jacob Atienza, and senior Brad Bierworth.
Running fifth for the girls was the 400-free relay with a clocking of 4:05.20. The relay had McCoy, DeFabio, Porach, and Giardino.
The boys fifth-place 400 free relay crew included Martin, junior P.J. Blayney, Govang, and Bierworth. Their time was 3:29.75.
In the diving competition, Brad Yates showed his improvement by placing third overall with a score of 335.05 while Mikey Strong finished fifth overall at 295.00.
Govang also placed eighth in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 500 free.
Bierworth posted a 10th-place effort in the 50 free and was 12th overall in the 100 free, where Atienza was 15th.
Martin finished eighth in the 200 free at AU. Blayney swam 13th overall in the 200-yard individual medley. Jake McGlumphy was 16th in the diving competition.
For the girls, McCoy placed eighth and ninth respectively in the 200 free and 500 free races.

Madison Zelenka also was busy as she finished 10th in the 100 backstroke and 15th in the 200 IM, just behind Ryle Bretz.
In the 500 free, DeFabio touched 12th overall and also placed 15th in the 200 free. Porach was 15th in the 100-free race.
