Members of the Asian Sun Martial Arts Team brought home 13 medals from their showing at the American Tae Kwon Do Union National Championships May 27 in Orlando.
The team members competed in the World Class division, athletes ranging from 11 to 45 years old.
"I'm extremely happy and proud with the outcome of this tournament," said head coach Grandmaster Ryan Andrachik, owner of the Asian Sun schools. "This was the first time that Asian Sun attended the ATU nationals and it was fantastic to have such a commanding performance."
One of the team's competitors, Noah Shanafelt, age 13 of Green, was able to secure a spot on the cadet team after multiple fights throughout the day. The team will travel to Canada Open.
Along with Shanafelt, seven other athletes won gold in their divisions as well: Izzy Collyer, 14, of Hudson, Xander Oxford, 13, of Hudson, Anja Gardziola, 22, of Hudson, Vincie Ripepi, 21, of Hudson, and Jeff Heerema of Tallmadge, all won gold in sparring. Grant Bogdanski of Montrose, 11, and Jen Heerema of Tallmadge earned gold in their forms division. In addition, Jason Mosley, 16, of Hudson, earned a silver, and Jordan Heppe, 15, of Hudson, Michael Schmidt, 16, of Beachwood, Nick Shaner, 16, of Hudson, age 16, and Grant Bogdanski, 11, of Montrose, all earned bronze medals in their sparring divisions.
