For the first time in the history of Stow-Munroe Falls High School, the Bulldog boys have qualified for the state track and field meet in both the shot put and the 400-meter run.

The athletes responsible for those feats are Jeremiah Gyulai and Scott Cunnington. Both advanced to the state meet in their respective events at the Division I regional meet, which took place at Austintown Fitch High School May 24 and 26.

Gyulai qualified in the shot put, while Cunnington did so in the 400. Stow head coach John Roseman praised both for their performance at the regional meet.

"It's the first time that a Stow athlete qualified [for the state meet] in either of these events," said Roseman. "We're very proud of what they've been able to do."

Stow tied for 10th place overall as a team at regionals, scoring 20 points in the process. Alliance Marlington also tallied 20 points.

Canton GlenOak won the regional championship with 58 points, edging Lake Catholic, which finished in second place with 56 points. Canton McKinley was third with 47.5 points.

Cunnington placed second in the 400, clocking a time of 49.38 seconds.

Gyulai, meanwhile, claimed a regional championship in the shot put. He finished first in that event, heaving the put a distance of 56 feet, 2.5 inches.

The top four individual finishers and relay teams at regionals qualified for the state meet.

Stow's Adrian Woliver was also in the running, so to speak, in the shot put. He finished seventh in the event with an effort of 48-feet-4.25.

After winning a district crown in the 100, Cunnington was not able to advance in the event at regionals. He finished ninth in the preliminaries, recording a time of 11.21 seconds. Woliver, who placed fourth in the 100 at districts, was 14th in prelims with an effort of 11.33.

Gyulai also competed in the discus at Austintown Fitch. However, he was not able to advance to the state meet, finishing ninth in that event with a throw of 149 feet.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Meet was scheduled for June 2 and 3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. Results were not available at press time.
