The Hudson Middle School rugby teams participated in the Cleveland Youth Rugby League's final May 14.
The boys team had a roller coaster of a season with many ups and few downs.
Luckily for Hudson, the boys picked the right time to peak. The team started its postseason tournament seeded third in its first match of the day and cruised past St. Francis.
In the semifinals, Hudson faced West Park, a team it had not been able to beat in the regular season.
The boys scored early, kept up the attack and never let West Park take the lead at any point in the match en route to the win.
It was much of the same in the final game against Highland as the Hudson boys continued scoring early, winning the championship with a 26-21 victory.
Much of this season and the finals were spearheaded by the powerful running of Ryan Hess, who was the league's point leader, and Austin Close.
Aiden Pickston and Sam Wagnor played multiple positions and made major contributions to the championship victory.
Also contributing for Hudson were Ben Madar, Logan Hensel and Aiden Knox. Evan Planchet, who got injured earlier in the season, also was a member of the team.
The Hudson girls finished the tournament in the fifth/sixth-place match against Brunswick after fighting back from an opening-round two-point loss on a last-second try and conversion by Highland.
The Hudson girls, who battled injuries throughout the season, placed fifth with a lopsided victory. Tries came from Jenna Ito and some stellar kicking by Ava Paulozzi and Molly Bacon.
The team's co-captains were Anna Walters and Grace Safarz.
