AURORA -- After the first day of the Division I track and field meet at Austintown Fitch, Aurora qualified one individual for the state meet this weekend in Columbus.
Leah Angelo captured the fourth and final qualifying spot in the high jump (5-4) in a jumpoff with Chardon's Jessica Liechty. That added up to 4 1/2 team points for the Greenmen.
Walsh Jesuit's Nichole Charnigo, Stow-Munroe Falls' Maria Cistone and Tallmadge's Vanessa Lane were the top three girls in the event, and will move on to Columbus.
Meanwhile, Aurora's 4x800 relay team of Olivia and Samantha Grohe, Marissa Sesny and Shelby Adler finished 11th out of 16 team in 9:54.19, far down the state meet qualifying list. Teams from Mentor, Louisville, GlenOak and Canfield will advance.
Corinne Henderson (pole vault) and Olivia Grohe (1,600 run) were scheduled to compete in the regional meet May 26, but because of the Advocate's early Memorial Day deadlines, results in those two events were unavailable at presstime.
In the district meet the weekend before, Henderson placed second in the pole vsault at 10-8 and Grohe was third in the 1,600 at 5:20.61.
Action in Columbus begins at 4:40 p.m. on June 2 and noon June 3. The Jesse Owens track facility is north of the Shottenstein Center and Ohio State baseball stadium.
Angelo will compete starting at noon June 3. If Henderson advanced, she would compete at 3 p.m. June 3 and if Grohe advanced, she would compete at 5:15 p.m.
After the first day at the regional meet, Mentor, Solon and Walsh Jesuit were the top three teams on the girls side, while GlenOak, Austintown Fitch and Solon were leading the boys side.
