The Nordonia High School boys track and field team was not able to duplicate the girls squad's accomplishment at the Division I district meet last week. However, the Knights will be sending some athletes to the regional meet.

The district meet took place May 17 and 19 at Boliantz Stadium in Macedonia. Nordonia finished sixth overall with a total of 58 points.

Twinsburg captured first place with 87 points, while Hudson placed second with 79 points. Walsh Jesuit was third with 74.5 points.

According to Nordonia head coach Scott Barwidi, the Knights struggled during the first day of the meet. A contributing factor was an injury to senior Daniel Banks.

"Unfortunately, we did not do as well as we could have," said Barwidi. "We struggled on the prelim day with some exchanges in relays, and then we also lost a key part of our team to an injury."

The top four individuals and the top four relay teams advanced to the regional meet, which will be held this week.

Three Knights qualified for regionals in individual events. In fact, one of them, Spencer Coppedge, qualified in a pair of individual events.

Coppedge won a district championship in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.66 seconds. He also finished third in the 300 intermediate hurdles with an effort of 40.21.

Raymond Kovalchick claimed a district championship, as well. He did so in the pole vault by recording a height of 15 feet.

In addition, senior Andrew Wahl qualified for the regional meet in the 400. He finished fourth in the event with a time of 50.03 seconds.

One of Nordonia's relay teams also advanced to regionals. That was the 1,600 squad, which finished in second place with a time of 3:26.73. The members of that unit were Wahl, Bernard Russ, Larry Hart, and Coppedge.

Barwidi believes that the Knights who have advanced to the regional meet can also advance to the state meet. However, it will take their best effort of the season to do so.

"We did show some resiliency in the meet and were able to get the 1,600 relay to regionals without one of our best 400 runners (Banks)," said Barwidi. "The individuals that qualified--Coppedge, Wahl, and Kovalchick--have set themselves up for a chance to run in the state meet in Columbus. Like the girls, they will have to be at their best to move on."

The Division I Regional Meet is scheduled for May 24 and 26 at Austintown Fitch High School.
