Vanessa Lane was the Tallmadge girls track and field team's only first-place finisher on the first day of the Suburban League American Conference Championships May 9 at Nordonia High School's Boliantz Stadium in Macedonia.
Lane, a senior, won the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 2 inches, defeating Aurora's Leah Angelo and Highland's Jenna Saunders on misses. Amela Masic placed eighth (4-6).
"Vanessa did really well," Lady Blue Devils head coach Mike Srodawa said. "She worked hard for this. She has been consistent all year.
"For Amela's first year on the team, she has done really well."
At the close of the day, Tallmadge was in third place overall with 16 points. The competition was scheduled to concluded May 11. Final results were not available at press time.
On May 4, the host Lady Blue Devils finished in first place with 108 points at the five-team T-Con Relays at Thomas Rossiaky Stadium. Field placed second with 82 points and Kent Roosevelt took third with 68 points in the five-team event.
In the Suburban League Championships, the 3,200-meter relay team of Claire Cate, Morgan Moses, Chloe Heestand and Ravyn Edge finished fifth with a time of 10 minutes, 54 seconds.
"It was an impressive performance, especially for Ravyn," Srodawa said. "She had a really, really good leg. Her split was 2:26, which is a season best for her."
Lauren Bradshaw finished eighth in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 30-9.
"Lauren has been flirting with 30 feet for about the last three weeks and she finally got it, so I'm pretty happy with that," Srodawa said. "She is definitely making strides."
Qualifying for the finals were junior Sara Johnson in the 100 and 200; senior Alexis Malish in the 100; senior Brittney Harris in the 100 hurdles and junior Madison Tasich in the 300 hurdles.
Srodawa was very pleased with his team's performance in the T-Con Relays.

The 400 relay team of Tasich, Malish, Johnson and Harris finished first with a time of 51.76.
"The fact that they've consistently been in the low 51s all season is fantastic," Srodawa said.
