WRA tennis earns two wins

The host Western Reserve Academy boys tennis team improved to 8-1 overall after posting a 5-0 victory over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary May 3.

Kai Cheung (6-2, 6-2), Ilon Goldberg (6-3, 6-0) and Kevin Wu (6-0, 6-1) had little trouble in singles' play and the Pioneers' doubles' teams of Will Portnoy and Kevin Escott (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) and David Smith and Thomas Tang (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) prevailed.

Reserve posted a 3-2 win over St. John May 2 in Ashtabula.

Wu was the lone Pioneer to win in singles' play. He earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Both of Reserve's doubles' teams won.

Portnoy and Escott cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory at first doubles and Smith and Tang posted a 7-6, 6-3 win at second doubles.

WRA was scheduled to entertain Willoughby Andrews Osborne Academy and Conneaut May 4 and 5.

The Pioneers are set to visit Kiski May 6 in Saltsburg, Pa.

All three of those matches were not available at press time.

Reserve is scheduled to host Pepper Pike Orange May 8 and Hudson May 10. Both matches are set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
