The Nordonia High School softball team has been scratching and clawing in its attempt to get back to the .500 mark. And this past week, the Lady Knights did just that.

Nordonia accomplished the feat by winning three of four games. The Lady Knights didn't start the week on a promising note, though.

That's because they lost to Suburban League National Conference foe Brecksville-Broadview Heights by the score of 4-1 on the road April 24.

Five players had singles for Nordonia. They included senior Rachel Vickers, junior Lexi Maciejowski, sophomore Jenn Willis, junior Grace Barth, and senior Madi Filakosky.

Nordonia bounced back from the Brecksville loss, though, winning three games in a row. The first victory in that series was against conference counterpart Cuyahoga Falls at home April 25. The Lady Knights tamed the Lady Black Tigers by the score of 12-2 in five innings.

Senior Skylar Dean led the way, going 3-for-3 with a single, triple, and home run. Junior Rachel Cornett singled and doubled, while junior Hannah Ours tripled and scored two runs. In addition, junior Kendall Becker singled and scored three runs and Willis smacked a double.

On April 26, Nordonia welcomed conference rival Hudson to town. The Lady Knights edged the Lady Explorers by the score of 5-4.

Becker was 2-for-3 with a double and single and Filakosky cracked a triple. Contributing singles for Nordonia were junior Kayla Buck, Vickers, Maciejowski, Willis, and Ours.

On April 28, Nordonia competed in the Prebis Tournament at Wellington Community Park. The Lady Knights downed Columbia in thrilling fashion, coming from behind to win 11-9.

Vickers paced Nordonia with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate (double and single). Other major contributors for the Lady Knights included Ours (two singles and three runs scored), Maciejowski (two singles), and Barth (two singles).

With that series of games, Nordonia improved its overall record to 9-9 as of press time. The Lady Knights are also 6-3 within the National Conference.

The Division I district tournament draw was also held recently. As a result of that draw, Nordonia received the fourth seed in the tournament.

Nordonia is scheduled to open the postseason May 9, at home against Akron East, the 13th seed. If the Lady Knights win that game, they'll advance to play either Solon or Kent Roosevelt May 10.

On May 4, they're scheduled to battle non-league opponent St. Joseph Academy on the road.
