Rita Covin won her first game last week as the interim Nordonia High School head softball coach.
Unfortunately, the Lady Knight stumbled after that, dropping a string of four contests. Three of those losses were at the Racers Spring Showcase in Akron.
Covin was name the interim head coach April 7, the same day that then-head coach Amie Cormell submitted her resignation.
On April 10, Nordonia hosted Suburban League National Division rival Twinsburg, pounding the Lady Tigers by the score of 9-1.
Junior Lexi Maciejowski crushed a two-run homer to lead the Lady Knights at the plate. Meanwhile, junior Rachel Cornett twirled a complete game on the mound to notch the pitching victory.
On April 11, the Lady Knights visited division rival Wadsworth. This time, the outcome was not quite as rosy, as the Lady Grizzlies beat Nordonia by a 5-1 margin.
Cornett suffered the loss on the pitching mound. The Lady Knights managed only three hits offensively. With the win, Wadsworth improved to 5-1.
On April 14 and 15, Nordonia participated in the Racers Spring Showcase in Akron. The Lady Knights' three opponents included Medina, St. Joseph, and Green.
Nordonia dropped a 9-7 decision to Medina April 14. Maciejowski was a bright spot for the Lady Knights, as she smashed another home run.
In the first contest April 15, St. Joseph edged the Lady Knights by the score of 6-5. In the second game, Nordonia lost by a wide margin to Green.
As a result of that series of games, Nordonia now owns an overall record of 2-7. The Lady Knights are also 2-1 within the National Division.
Despite her team's record, Covin is encouraged by the way in which the players have handled recent events. The Lady Knights are a team in transition, and they've responded well to that transition.
"Fortunately, I've had all the girls in class," said Covin. "I teach in the middle school. They've handled the transition well and they're working hard."
Nordonia was set to visit division nemesis Hudson April 17 and host Stow-Munroe Falls April 18, but results from both games were not available at press time.
The Knights will travel to Stow April 19 at 4:30 p.m. and host North Royalton April 20 at 4:30 p.m. before host a doubleheader with Mayfield April 22 . Game one is scheduled for noon.
