The Hudson boys volleyball team finished 1-2 at the Polar Bear Tournament April 8 at Jackson High School in Massillon.
Hudson defeated Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 25-13, 25-17 and lost to Jackson 25-17, 22-25, 25-22 and Westerville 25-15, 26-24.
Against SVSM, Jan Dalkowski led the Explorers (1-4) with four aces and four kills and Matt Gentry had eight kills and no errors.
"What was important was the solid defense and passing from Aidan L'Hommedieu and Kellen McCabe," Hudson head coach Larry Meehan said.
Against the Polar Bears, Mitch Gray led the Explorers with four kills and four blocks and Gentry added six kills and two blocks. Larry Meehan added two kills, three blocks, two digs and five assists for Hudson.
"After a lackluster first set, I was very pleased at how we played against a very good Jackson team," coach Meehan said. "In winning the second set, it was as well as we have played to this point in the season.
"We served aggressively and effectively, blocked well and at times, looked inspired on defense."
Gray had four kills and four blocks against Westerville and Kolby Miller had three kills, a block and two out-of-system assists.
"Westerville was a big, athletic team that simply outplayed us in the first set," coach Meehan said. "That said, I was very pleased with our team's effort and energy in what was our last set of the day.
"Again, we came close in the second, but we could not get over the hump. Our guys are still learning, but I feel good that they continue to battle and take on valuable experiences. I am hopeful that better results will arrive, but generally speaking, we are showing progress."
The Explorers were scheduled to host Brunswick April 11 at Ray "Buck" Hyser Gymnasium. Results were not available at press time.
Hudson is set to visit SVSM April 12 before returning home to play Medina April 13. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
