Like most teams in Northeast Ohio, the Nordonia tennis squad has been forced to dodge rain drops during the past couple of weeks.

However, the Knights have been able to squeeze in four matches to this point in the 2017 campaign. In fact, Nordonia won its first contest of the season March 29 against Barberton on the road.

The Knights downed the Magics by the score of 4-1. Shawn Iyer won at first singles for Nordonia by the score of 6-3, 6-0. In addition, Cody Dodds was victorious at third singles 6-1, 6-4.

In addition, the Knights' first doubles tandem of Mitch Ehrman and Spencer Harp posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory. The second doubles unit of Ethan Lee and Tyler Mattei prevailed by the score of 6-3, 6-4.

On April 3, Nordonia hosted Suburban League National Division rival Hudson. The Knights dropped a 5-0 decision to the Explorers.

"The first doubles team played a pretty competitive match against Hudson," said Nordonia head coach Ryan Vehar. "They played well."

On April 4, Nordonia traveled to non-division opponent Kent Roosevelt, where the Knights dropped a 3-2 decision.

Nordonia's first doubles unit of Ehrman and Harp won in three sets. The score was 6-3, 6-3. The second doubles team of Lee and Mattei was also victorious, posting a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.

On April 5, Nordonia hit the road again. This time, the Knights visited division adversary Stow-Munroe Falls. Once again, they lost by the narrow margin of 3-2.

Both doubles teams posted wins for Nordonia. Mitch and Spencer produced a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Lee and Mattei, meanwhile, won by the score of 6-3, 6-4.

"The doubles teams are playing well right now," said Vehar. "They have continuity with their teammates and they complement each other. They help each other out and pick the other guy up. If somebody is having an off-game, they get back on track. They're working well together and making it happen."

According to Vehar, his singles players don't have a lot of varsity experience and it will take some time for them to progress to the same level.

"Sean Iyer is coming off a knee injury and he only played doubles during his sophomore year," said Vehar. "This is his first time playing singles on vasity. Nick Pedone is playing second singles, and he played JV last year. This is also Cody Dodds's first year of playing varsity. I'm looking forward to continuing improvement by our singles players."
