This past week might best be described as a week of transition for the Nordonia High School softball team.

The good news is that Nordonia registered its first victory of the 2017 season. However, it appears as though the Lady Knights will pursue more victories under the guidance of a new head coach.

Effective April 7, Amie Cormell resigned as the Nordonia head softball coach. Cormell, a long-time coach at Nordonia in multiple sports, was starting her third season as the head coach. She served as an assistant softball coach prior to that and was also the head girls basketball coach in the district for many years.

Rita Colvin will replace her on an interim basis for the remainder of the 2017 campaign.

On April 4, Nordonia traveled to Suburban League National Division foe Cuyahoga Falls. The Lady Knights notched their first victory of the season by taming the Lady Black Tigers by the score of 15-4.

Nordonia jumped all over Cuyahoga Falls, scoring three runs in the first inning, one run in the second stanza, and two more during the third frame. The Lady Knights then kept up the onslaught, plating four, two, and three runs during the next three innings to run-rule the Black Tigers after six total frames.

Nordonia junior Rachel Cornett (1-3) earned the victory on the pitching mound. She went the distance, allowing six hits and four runs.

The Lady Black Tigers did not help themselves by committing four errors in the field. Nordonia was only guilty of one error.

With the win, Nordonia improved to 1-3 overall. The Lady Knights are also 1-0 in National Division action. Cuyahoga Falls, meanwhile, remained winless on the season at 0-4.

Last week, Nordonia had home games postponed against Brecksville-Broadview Heights (April 3) and North Royalton (April 6).

On April 10, Nordonia was set to host division nemesis Twinsburg followed by a trip to Wadsworth April 11, but results were not available at press time.

On April 14 and 15, Nordonia is scheduled to participate in the Racers Spring Showcase in Akron. The Lady Knights' three opponents will include Medina, Cleveland St. Joseph and Green.
