Two defensive mental lapses, a base running error and a failed suicide squeeze on the last play of the game cost the Woodridge softball team in a 3-2 loss April 5 at Portage Trail Conference Metro Division rival Ravenna.

"It was a tough way to end the game, but we gave it a shot," said Woodridge head coach Dan Schneider.

Two days earlier the same two teams tangled, but at Woodridge, and Ravenna also won that one 7-2.

The game on April 5 was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead.

Junior second baseman Cassie Riebau singled, senior shortstop Mackenzie Mercer doubled, junior catcher Sage Jenkins singled home Riebau and junior first baseman Sydney Shaheen singled home Mercer.

Sophomore Caitlin Raid, who went the distance, gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. She yielded an RBI double in the sixth, which was the Ravens' winning run.

Raid struck out 8 batters and pitched pretty well, according to Schneider. She also had two singles.

Sophomore left fielder Brayden Wigal had a single.

The April 3 game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when starter Raid ran into trouble and allowed two runs. She gave up four more runs in the sixth before anyone was out. Wigal replaced her and went the rest of the way.

Raid had 7 strikeouts and 3 walks. Wigal yielded a run and fanned 3.

Jenkins and senior outfielder Ally Rohrer each had two singles. Jenkins and Raid scored a run apiece.

Woodridge carried a 2-3 overall record and an 0-2 Metro Division mark into games at Tallmadge April 8 against the host Blue Devils and against Stow-Munroe Falls, both non-conference contests. The results, however, were not available at press time.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Metro Division rival Streetsboro April 10 and are set to host the same Rockets April 11. Woodridge is scheduled to visit Cloverleaf, another division foe, April 12. First pitch for all three games is set for 4:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play a doubleheader April 15 at non-conference opponent Wooster Triway, starting at 11 a.m.
