Early in the 2017 season, the Nordonia High School softball team has battled both Mother Nature and defensive lapses.

Because of the former, the Lady Knights have only played two games.

Due in large part to the latter, they lost both of those contests.

Nordonia played a doubleheader against Massillon Jackson on the road March 29. It was the only action the Lady Knights saw last week due to inclement weather conditions.

Nordonia dropped the first game of the twinbill by the score of 8-5. The Lady Polar Bears scored seven runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a few errors by the Lady Knights. Nordonia finished with six errors for the ballgame.

"We need to clean it up defensively," said Nordonia head coach Amie Cormell. "We had a couple of really bad innings."

Junior Rachel Cornett, the starting pitcher for Nordonia, also led the Lady Knights offensively. She singled twice with one RBI and one run scored.

In addition, senior Madi Filakosky and junior Hannah Ours both singled twice and drove in a run. Junior Lexi Maciejowski went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Nordonia actually outhit Jackson, 12-8.

"The errors just killed us," said Cormell. "I told the girls that we have room for improvement. We certainly haven't peaked in our first game, certainly not as far as the throwing errors are concerned."

Nordonia lost the second game of the doubleheader against Jackson by the score of 11-5. Junior Grace Barth started on the mound for the Lady Knights. Senior Syklar Dean relieved her in the fifth inning and then finished the game.

Once again, Filakosky led the way for Nordonia offensively. She was 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI. Filakosky was the Lady Knight with multiple hits in the contest.

"We only had two errors in that game, but they outhit us," said Cormell. "They had 11 hits, and we only had seven total hits."

Despite the 0-2 start to the campaign, Cormell is confident that her team will be able to turn things around, especially defensively.

"Hopefully, we can rebound from our errors and make some adjustments," she said. "We have to come into this week ready to play."

Nordonia will open up play in the National Division of the Suburban League this week. The Lady Knights are scheduled to battle Brecksville-Broadview Heights at home April 3 and Cuyahoga Falls on the road April 4. Results from both contests were not available at press time.

On Thursday, April 6, Nordonia will host division rival North Royalton. The Lady Knights were also slated to host Mayfield at noon on Saturday, April 1, for a "Strikeout Cancer" benefit. That contest was postponed due to the weather and will now be played April 22.
