For the Tallmadge baseball team, it's a case of so far, so good.

The Blue Devils got off to a solid start to the season by sweeping a home doubleheader March 25 at Dave Young Field. Tallmadge opened with a 6-5 win over Uniontown Lake and then scored a 6-2 win over Akron Ellet.

The Blue Devils then hit the road to South Carolina over spring break as Tallmadge took part in a series of games at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Blue Devils opened that run by defeating Elkhorn (Wisc.) 5-1 March 29 and Sullivan North from Kingsport, Tenn., 11-0 March 30.

Tallmadge needed some late heroics in its season opener. Lake took a 3-1 lead after one inning and led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

However, the Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win. Senior Josh Taylor tied the game with a double.

Taylor also picked up the win in relief after pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Tallmadge starter Zach Boyd settled down after the three-run first inning.

The Blue Devils also got a home run from junior Jared Burick in the win.

Burick started on the mound and picked up the win against Ellet. Burick, Sam Seeker, Cameron Knutty and Scott Seeker combined to allow just two hits by the Orangemen.

After Ellet took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Tallmadge scored six unanswered runs. The Blue Devils had 14 hits in the win. That total included the first home run of the season from junior Phil Gasser.

Tallmadge may have hit the Myrtle Beach March 30, but Boyd made certain it was no day at the beach for Elkhorn.

The junior allowed just one hit in six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season, while junior Mikah McGlaughlin closed out the win in the seventh.

The Blue Devils spread their offense around in the victory. Taylor and Gergely each had two singles in the win. Glasser and Boyd each had run-scoring singles and Jake Rensel.

Against Sullivan North, Burick and Knutty combined for a one-hitter over five innings in the mercy-rule win.

Taylor had two runs batted in, while Boyd, Scott Seeker and Derek Lightel each had an RBI. Seven different Blue Devils had hits in the win.

Tallmadge was set to close out its Myrtle Beach trip March 31 against Peters Township. Results were not available at press time.

The Blue Devils return to Ohio and are scheduled to open their Suburban League American Conference schedule this week. Tallmadge is set to visit Kent Roosevelt April 4 before hosting the Rough Riders April 5 at Dave Young Field. First pitch both days is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils are set to entertain Cleveland St. Ignatius April 8 at 11 a.m.
