AURORA -- Although several inches of snow covered the ground late last week in most parts of Northeast Ohio, the spring sports season is not far off.
Spring athletes at Aurora High have been working out the last few weeks in preparation for warmer, sunnier and drier weather, when they can get outside.
According to the Greenmen's schedules, the varsity baseball team actually is slated to open the season March 23 with a hoime game against Crestwood, but the liklihood of that happening is very questionable.
The Greenmen baseballers also are scheduled to play a doubleheader March 25 at home against Ravenna. The first Suburban League American Conference contests are slated for March 29 and 30 against Kent Roosevelt.
The varsity softball team is scheduled to open regular season play March 27 at home against Nordonia, with the first Suburban League contest slated for March 29 at Kent Roosevelt.
Aurora is scheduled to play five Saturday doubleheaders this season, but as spring sports fans know, those and weekday single games are dependent on the weather.
In addition to Ravenna, the scheduled doubleheaders are against Chardon, Eastlake North, Westlake and Green.
The softballers are slated to play twinbills agsainst Mayfield, Solon, Streetsboro and Chardon.
Among other non-league opponents on the baseball schedule are Avon, Shaler Heights, Mentor, University School, Strongsville, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney and Mayfield.
The only other scheduled non-league foe for the softball squad is Strongsville.
The boys and girls track squads are scheduled to open the season March 28 at Kent Roosevelt, with the home opener slated for April 4 against Barberton.
The annual Aurora Invitational, which traditionally takes place on a Friday night, will instead be on a Thursday this yar5 (April 13).
In addition to the Greenmen, that meet will feature Berkshire, Crestwood, Eastlake North, Highland, Ravenna, Streetsboro and Tallmadge.
AHS boys tennis is scheduled to kick off March 29 against Twinsburg. Home boys tennis matches are not as prone to postponement since they are played indoors at the Western Reserve Racquet and Fitness Club on Aurora-Hudson Road in Streetsboro.
Harmon School seventh- and eighth-grade track is scheduled to open April 5 against Nordonia at Veterans Stadium. The middle school baseball and softball programs for this year have been eliminated by the School Board.
