Four earn honors

Aurora resident Sasha Schostek received Associated Press honorable mention Northeast Inland District recognition in Division IV girls basketball. She is a freshman at Lawrence School in Sagamore Hills and averaged 11.4 points per game.

Meanwhle, the Women's Tri-County Basketball Coaches Association named Aurora High coach Erika Greenberg the Division I coach of the year. Syarra Sellers was named to the Division I first team and her sister Shayla was named to the Division I second team.

Umpire clinic set

Umpire Masters Protessional Services will conduct an umpire training clinic March 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ravenna High. The clinic costs $35 and is open to anyone over 16 years old (males and females). For more information or to register, call Joe Stephenson at 330-322-1222.

Chili Bowl run set

April 7 in Mantua

Registration is under way for Mantua's Chili Bowl 5K hosted by Advanced Rehabiliation and Health Specialists.

This year's event will take place April 7 at 6 p.m. Races begin at 4707 Mill Street in Mantua and head east on the Headwaters Trail.

Pre-registration includes a customized ceramic mug for the first 72 at the price of $20. Student registration costs $10, day of race price is $22 (and will include a mug if any are left) or $15 if no mugs are available.

Registration opens at 5:15 p.m. on April 7. Racers can stay after to try different chilies and vote for their favorite bowl. There will be prizes for the winners of the vegetable and meat chili contest.

Personal chili recipes can also be entered for a chance to be the 2017 Chili Bowl cook-off winner. Call the office by March 30 to enter.

Flashes bow out

It was one and done for the Kent State men's and women's basketball teams in the NCAA and National Invitation Tournament last week. The men lost to UCLA 97-80 in the NCAA tourney and the women lost to Miochigan 67-60 in the opening round of the NIT.

The Flashes men ended their season 22-14 and the women ended 19-13. For the men, Jaylin Walker tallied 23 points, Jimmy Hall had 20, Deon Edwin 18 and Kevin Zabo 12.

Larissa Lurken had 19 points and 8 rebounds and broke the single season national record for most made free throws at 280. She averaged 23.5 points per game this season and set the school record for most points in a single season at 752. McKenna Stephens added 11 points and Jordan Korinek had 10.

ABL plans events

A parents meeting for the Aurora Baseball League's recreational baseball players will be April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harmon School's commons.

T-ball, rookie and coach pitch parents will meet at 6 and junior, minor and major parents at 7. All parents are encouraged to attend.

Coaches meetings and equipment pickup will be April 3 all day in Harmon School's commons. On April 8, all ABL members can receive a 20 percent discount on merchandise at Dick's Sports Goods.

Opening day for the 2017 season is April 29. A ceremony is planned at 9 a.m. at Field 3 near Kiwanis-Moore Playground.

The ABL is planning its inaugural wing ding fundraiser with help from the Aurora Inn, and is part5nering with the city to make improvements at Field 4, including full fencing around the field.
