Three get honors

Aurora High girls basketball coach Erika Greenberg has been named Northeast Inland Division I coach of the year by the Associated Press, while hoopsters Syarra and Shayla Sellers were named honorable mention all-district.

for lifting weights

Aurora High football team's winter weightlifting season came to an end March 10, and nine athletes made the 900-pound club.

Sophomore Adon Tell was tops on the list at 1,100 pounds, while junior Cole Miller came in at 1,005 pounds and juniors Michael Dudziak and Montana Nietert were at 1,000 pounds.

Junior Justin Merrifield and sophomore Marcus Baroun were at 965 pounds, junior Nate Smierciak at 915 and juniors Jared DeMicco and Blake Carnahan at 900.

Posting the most increase in weight for three lifts were: juniors -- Smierciak (115), Brandon Hall (105) and Blake Lightfoot (100); sophomores -- Tell (175), Kobe Coachman (145), Carnahan (125) and Graham Aldredge (115); and freshmen Alex Hicks (160), Alex Hawk (130) and Lenny Galaska (105).

Attending all 23 sessions were Conor Kadow, Nietert, Aldredge, Carnahan, Hawk and Tucker Nietert.

Youth sports set

The Aurora Raptors girls travel fast pitch softball program is for ages 9 to 18. It is dedicated to developing softball players for the high school level. Teams compete with surrounding communities. League play starts in May.

Meanwhile, the registration deadline for spring recreation soccer leagues for grades prekindergarten to 8 is March 17. Practices begin April 10 and games run from April 22 to June 11 on Saturdays (pre-k to 8 and Sundays for pre-k). Check with the Aurora Parks-Rec Department at 330-562-4333 for details.

Jump Start Sports will offer a lacrosse clinic for grades 1 to 5 on Wednesdays at 7:15 p.m. from April 12 to May 17.

Distance runs set

Distance runs are returning to Northeast Ohio, and one of the first will be the Strongsville Super Saturday 5K and 1-miler March 18 at Ehrnfelt Rec and Senior Center on Royalton Road behind Target. Schroeder excels

Aurora High graduate Scott Schroeder helped the Baldwin Wallace men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Webber International Invitational in Florida. The senior shot 76. The Yellow Jackets are back in action April 1 for the John Carroll Invitational.
