Two Cleveland area teams will see action in this year's Ohio High School Athletic Association girls state basketball tournament this weekend at the Shottenstein Center in Columbus.
After defeating Garrettsville Garfield 76-46 in the Division III regional finals, Gilmour Academy will take its 22-5 record into the state semifinals against Columbus Africentric (25-3). That game will be March 17 at 1 p.m. The winner will face either Sardinia Eastern (26-1) or Versailles (25-3) on March 18 at 5:15 p.m.
In Division II, Hathaway Brown of Shaker Heights (17-10) will face Miami Trace (24-4) on March 16 at 3 p.m., with the winner playing either Ottawa-Glandorf (27-0) or Kettering Alter (26-2) on March 18 at 10:45 a.m.
Other state tourney games are: Division I -- Canton McKinley (23-5) vs. Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame (24-4), March 17 at 6 p.m.; and Newark (28-0) vs. Toledo Notre Dame (25-3), March 17 at 8 p.m. (finals March 18 at 8:30 p.m.); Division IV -- Waterford (24-3) vs. Jackson Center (23-4), March 16 at 6 p.m.; and Berlin Hiland (27-1) vs. Ottoville (24-3), March 16 at 8 p.m. (finals March 18 at 2 p.m.
Canton McKinley beat Solon 51-49 in the regional finals. The Comets (24-3) earlier had ousted Aurora in the district tournament.
Meanwhile, boys regional action is under this week. Semifinals got under way March 14, and finals are either March 17 or 18.
The following area teams made it to the semifinals: Garfield Heights, St. Edward, Mentor, Eyria and Medina in Division I, Cleveland Central Catholic, Lake Catholic, Holy Name and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in Division II, Garrettsville Garfield and Villa Angela St. Joseph in Division III and Lutheran East in Division IV.
