COLUMBUS -- Cuyahoga Falls-based schools enjoyed a solid first day at the 80th OHSAA state wrestling tournament March 9 at Value City Arena in Columbus.

All eight local wrestlers advanced to day two March 10, with six of them advancing to the quarterfinals. Results from March 10 and 11 at states were not available at press time.

At the Division I level, Walsh Jesuit 126-pounder Matt Fields opened the tournament in style with a 16-0 technical fall over Hilliard Bradley's Zander Ellison. Fields dominated on top, using his tilt to turn Ellison four times.

"I'm just taking it one match at a time," Fields said. "I was persistent with my moves in that match. Everyone knows I have that tilt."

At the Division II level, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy's three lightweight stars all opened with technical-fall wins.

At 106 pounds, Jacob Decatur scored a 22-6 win over Napoleon's Cale Hernandez.

At 113 pounds, Matt Cardello won 17-0 over Kenton Ridge's Bryce Davis.

At 126 pounds, Jordan Decatur got his first win at states with a 15-0 win over Western Brown's Tanner Donathan.

CVCA freshman 220-pounder Breslin Walker looked a bit tentative in his first match, as he lost 3-0 to Norwalk's Abdullah Silmi. However, Walker came back with an 8-5 win over Morgan's Scott Harry to advance to day two.

Meanwhile, Woodridge had its best first day ever at Division II, with two wrestlers advancing to the quarterfinals.

At 120 pounds, junior David Massey scored the first state win of his career with a 9-2 win over Bellbrook's Ben Sherrill.

"It definitely feels good to win the first one and move on," Massey said. "It is not so much pressure now that I'm in the quarterfinals."

At 138 pounds, senior Eli Yoho continue his recent form with an 9-3 win over Ashland's Landon Plank.

Meanwhile at 170 pounds, junior Spencer Robinson lost his opening match 9-0 to Sandusky Perkins' Keysean Amison. However, Robinson rebounded with a dominant win over Carrollton's Brenton Miller. He scored a 12-2 major-decision win to advance.
