Last year, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy coach Dave Bergen took a "quality over quantity" approach to the postseason.

He didn't have much choice with a small team.

If the start of this year's postseason is any indication, CVCA should have both quality and quantity moving forward.

The Royals finished second Feb. 25 at the Division II sectional tournament at St. Vincent-St. Mary with 180 points. SVSM won the team title with 211.5 points.

More importantly, CVCA advanced eight wrestlers on to districts, including five weight class champions. The top four finishers in each weight class at SVSM advanced to districts.

CVCA's two returning All-Ohioans each won their respective brackets.

At 106 pounds, sophomore Jacob Decatur pinned Chagrin Falls' Johnathan Mares in 3:40 and Crestwood's Brett Szuhay in 1:58 to reach the title match. In the finals, Decatur defeated SVSM's Hunter Olson 7-4 to take the title.

Meanwhile, junior 113-pounder Matt Cardello opened with a bye and pinned Orange's Nick Began in 29 seconds to reach the final.

The 113-pound final was a battle of All-Ohioans, as Cardello tangled with Streetsboro's Dominic Carone. Cardello would score a 12-6 win to take the title.

Weight issues at sectionals last year ended sophomore 126-pounder Jordan Decatur's postseason before it started. Decatur left nothing to chance this year. He pinned SVSM's Nick Llewellyn in 3:24, stuck Benedictine's Matt Stouffer in 1:04 and pinned Woodridge's state qualifier David Massey in 3:42 to take the title.

CVCA's other two champions came at the top of the weights.

At 220 pounds, freshman Breslin Walker pinned Benedictine's Christian Isom in 52 seconds and beat Revere's Ethan Depp 12-2 to reach the final. Walker then claimed the title when SVSM's Louis Stecz had default due to injury.

Freshaman heavyweight Matt Holman opened with a pin in 22 seconds over Cleveland Central Catholic's Tyler Boyd and then squeezed out a 2-1 win over top-seeded Nick Kelly of Revere.

In the final, Holman scored a 5-2 win over Woodridge's Austin Hindley to take the title.

CVCA had two other finalists. At 120 pounds, sophomore Danny Sinchok reached the title match, but he lost there to Woodridge's Brandon Reeves 11-6.

A similar path was followed by junior 138-pounder Justin West, who reached the final before losing to Woodridge state qualifier Eli Yoho 8-2.

CVCA's final district qualifier was 152-pounder Joe Morales-Rodridgez, who took fourth place. Senior 195-pounder Pat Butler earned a district alternate spot by placing fifth.

The Division II district tournament at Alliance was set for March 3 and 4, but results were not available at press time. The top four placers in each weight class at districts advance to the state meet.

The Division II state tournament will be March 9-11 at Value City Arena in Columbus.
