The Nordonia High School ice hockey team's season came to a close recently, as the Knights fell to defeat against Kenston in the opening round of the state tournament.

The Bombers bombed Nordonia by the score of 11-0 Feb. 18 at the Kent State University Ice Arena.

"Kenston is a really good team," said Nordonia head coach Rich Cinalli. "We hung with them pretty well. I'm proud of the way we played. They scored four goals in the first period, but that was pretty good considering they had 33 shots on goal in that period alone.

"Our goalie, (junior) Anthony Cinalli, got pretty tired. Normally, he doesn't see that many shots on goal during an entire game."

Nordonia, conversely, only managed five shots on goal in the first period. Kenston then found the back of the next seven times during the second stanza. That brought the contest to an end prematurely due to the 10-goal differential rule.

"Our lack of experience and depth showed in the second period," said coach Cinalli. "Most of the game was played in our own zone."

This season, Nordonia also qualified to play in the Baron Cup for the first time in three years. Unfortunately, the Knights suffered a 7-1 defeat against Brooklyn in the first round of the Cup Feb. 7.

For his performance this past season, Nordonia senior Luke Friss was named third team All-Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League. In addition, Friss and Anthony Cinalli were named second team All-Blue South Division.

Friss was also nominated to play in the Senior All-Star Game March 17 at Quicken Loans Arena. The contest is being held prior to the Cleveland Monsters game on the same night.

"I'm proud of everything we accomplished this season," said coach Cinalli. "We're going to get back at it as soon as we can. We have a few new players coming in."

Nordonia is losing four seniors to graduation. They include Friss, Brandon Bayus-Libby, Jeremy Adamcik, Harbir Multani and Josh Czerr.

"We're going to miss the seniors," said coach Cinalli. "They did a great job for us. Some of the experience that our underclassmen gained will help us next year. We have a very good team coming up. Everything is on the upswing."
