The Nordonia High School boys swimming team is getting into the habit of producing exciting victories.
On Jan. 28, the Knights edged Western Reserve Academy 90-89.
Then on Feb. 3, Nordonia clipped Riverside 86-84 at the Macedonia Recreation Center.
The Nordonia girls team defeated Riverside, as well, but by a much wider margin (139-37). It was also Senior Night for the Knights and Lady Knights. As a result, Nordonia recognized its senior class. This year, that class consists of Sunny Starcher, Claudia Gillota, Tommy Koperna, and Walid Abuhashim.
The Nordonia boys topped Riverside even though the Knights did not notch a ton of first-place finishes. They prevailed by virtue of their overall effort.
Junior Jared Toaz and sophomore Timmy Tomkovicz led the way for Nordonia, as each finished first in an individual event and was part of a winning relay team. Toaz captured the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.28, while Tomkovicz claimed first place in the 200 individual medley with an effort of 2:18.48.
Both athletes were part of the Knights' victorious 400 freestyle relay unit, which finished first in 3:34.97. The other members of that squad were junior Jared Schneider and sophomore Dominic Dasher.
Also placing first in individual events for the Knights were junior Matt Crawford in the 500 freestyle (5:32.12) and sophomore Jason Lewicki in one-meter diving (154.50 points).
Meanwhile, three Nordonia girls finished first in two individual events apiece. They were junior Amanda Westbrooks, junior Christine McFarland, and Gillota.
Westbrooks accomplished the feat in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.57 and the 200 freestyle with an effort of 2:15.15. McFarland won both the 50 freestyle (25.79) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.10).
Gillota was victorious in both the 100 breaststroke and the 100 freestyle. Her time in the former was 1:15.55, while her effort in the latter was 1:04.22.
Three other Lady Knights won individual events. That trio consisted of sophomore Taylor Coppedge in the 200 individual medley (2:46.35), freshman Morgan Harvey in the 500 freestyle (6:33.24), and sophomore Harlequinn Bodziony in one-meter diving (156.37 points).
To cap off their overwhelming victory, the Lady Knights also captured first place in three relay races. One of those races was the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:03.42. The members of that unit were junior Carmen Licht, Gillota, McFarland, and Coppedge.
Nordonia's 200 freestyle relay contingent was also victorious in 1:53.81. That team consisted of Westbrooks, Gillota, junior Stephanie Schueren, and Licht.
The Lady Knights' 400 freestyle relay team also placed first, producing a time of 4:14.44 in the process. The members of that unit were Westbrooks, sophomore Emma Kleismit, Schueren, and McFarland.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association Sectional Meet is scheduled Feb. 11 at Ocasek Natatorium in Akron.
