AURORA -- The Greenmen easily captured the Suburban League American Conference championship Feb. 4 and finished third overall, as three individuals earned titles at the league wrestling tournament hosted by Aurora.
The locals amassed 176.5 points to finish ahead of Tallmadge's 134.5 points and Copley's 95.5. In the National Conference, Wadsworth claimed the title, with Brecksville-Broadview Heights and following.
Also last week, the Greenmen beat Mentor 35-32 in the state duals Division I Region 3 semifinals before losing to Brecksville 52-19. The latter will compete in the state duals Feb. 12 at St. John Arena in Columbus.
Claiming American Conference crowns were Jarrod Brezovec at 138 pounds -- the fourth time he has won a league title -- Conor Bizjak at 195 and Bubba Arslanian at 220.
Brezovec beat a Wadsworth foe 7-1, Bizjak pinned a Revere opponent and Arslanian posted a major decision over a Wadsworth wrestler in final matches.
According to AHS coach Johnny Papesh, Brezovec is 40-0 this season and has 159 career wins."A state title is on his mind," said the coach.
"Bizjak wrestled better than I've seen before," said Papesh, adding he leads the team in pins and also hopes to make it to the state tourney.
Arslanian won his second conference title and goes into the sectional tourney with a 31-1 record. "He is ready for the state tournament," said Papesh.
In the 120-pound class, Aurora's Jack Gorman was edged 1-0 by a Brecksville wrestler, and thus finished in second place.
"Gorman continues to improve and will be ready to make a run at the state tournament," said Papesh.
Aurora also had three third-place finishers -- Kyle Petersen at 106, Will McGhee at 152 (technical fall over a North Royalton grappler) and Colin McNamara at 170 (7-2 decision over a Tallmadge foe).
"Petersen is really hitting the corner, and I am excited to see what he can do this postseason," said Papesh, and added McGhee was the best he has looked in weeks. "And this was the best McNamara looked all year," he said.
Dominic Stuber grabbed fifth place at 145 with a 6-2 decision over a Hudson wrestler, while Jacob Loudon took sixth place at 182 after being pinned by a Barberton opponent.
Meanwhile, in the state duals, Greenmen who pinned their opponents were Brezovec (138), Loudon (182) and Arslanian (220).
Other local winners were Petersen (106), Gorman (120), McGhee (152), Scantland (160) and Bizjak (195).
Aurora's only winners in the Brecksville match were Brezovec, 17-6 major decision; Colin McNamara, 8-6 overtime decision at 170 pounds; Bizjak, pin; and Arslanian, pin.
The Greenmen (10-1 in dual matches) will compete in the sectional tournament Feb. 25 at Kenston.
