AURORA -- A record-setting performance in the girls 400 freestyle relay highlighted Aurora High swimming action last week, as the girls finished second and the boys were third in a meet against Mentor and Eastlake North.
The 400 relay of Lara Ketonen, Abbey Stechler, Paulina Galchenko and Lauren Sapochetti took first place in a school record-setting time of 3:57.32.
"Breaking the school record by over 2 seconds, the girls really helped set the tone for the remainder of the season," said coach Amanda Marlow.
"We also had multiple season bests from freshmen to seniors on both the boys and girls sides. The work this team has put in this season has been amazing, and their times are showing it.
"Our goal is to run fast on Feb. 10-11 at the sectional meet. This speaks wonders for what they are capable of and we cannot wait to see how the last few weeks of training pays off."
Other firsts for the Greenmen were: John Bender in 200 freestyle (2:09.99), Ketonen in 50 free (25.09) and 100 free (56.1), Drew Albrecht in diving (207.22 points) and Whitney Lieberth in 100 breaststroke (1:15.18).
Taking seconds for the locals were: Galchenko in 200 free (2:15.77), Nicholas Belofsky in 50 free (25.63), Kylie Palian in diving (151.73), Sapochetti in 100 butterfly (1:08.54), Tyler Hayes in 100 breaststroke (1:14.25) and the girls 200 free relay of Marissa Henderson, Madeline Schmitt, Julia Brezovec and Galchenko (1:53.69).
Capturing thirds werer: Schmitt in 100 backstroke (1:13.76), the girls 200 medley relay of Ketonen, Lieberth, Sapochetti and Stechler (2:02.99), the boys 200 medley relay of Alex Bailey, Hayes, Gunnar Meyer and Belofsky (2:03.29) and the boys 400 free relay of Bailey, Bender, Meyer and Belofsky (4:01.85).
Two more regular season meets remain before the sectional meet. The locals will swim against Tallmadge tonight (Jan. 25) and against Crestwood on Feb. 1 at the Hiram College poll. The action starts at 6:30 p.m.
