It's not often that basketball teams score 71 points against the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy boys program, but an experience Gilmour Academy unit forced the issue.
The Royals were defeated 71-62 against Gilmour Academy behind some hot shooting and up tempo play in Gates Mills Jan. 17.
With the tough road loss, CVCA dipped to 7-5 overall while the Lancers are 8-4.
CVCA had a strong third period, outscoring the Lancers 19-15, but the hosts exploded for 24 points in the final quarter.
It was a loss that spoiled a big outing by senior guard Elijah Turner. The 6-foot Turner pumped in 23 points, which was a game high. Turner also dished out three assists and had three rebounds.
Veteran head coach Jay Peters is happy to have senior forward Ryan Foguth back from a broken wrist.
Foguth put in 13 points and hauled down eight boards for the Royals.
Senior guard Terry Fair continued his progression as he netted eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out three assists.
Junior forward Hudson Hall added six points, three boards, and two feeds. Senior Terrell Hicks had five points and six caroms. Junior Elijah Payne added four points, and senior Nate Stull had three.
C.J. Charleston paced Gilmour with 20 points and five assists as he is averaging over 15 points a game this winter.
The Lancer's leading scorer, Dechlan Kirincic, a 6-foot-6 210-pound forward, added 16 points, eight rebounds, made two 3-pointers, dished out five assists, and had two steals.
Gilmour also was helped by guards Billy Diemer (12 points) and Johnny Hollis (nine points and two thefts).
Host CVCA remained unbeaten in Principal's Athletic Conference play with a 45-35 win over Navarre Fairless (2-8, 0-5) Jan. 13. As of this writing, CVCA had won four straight in the PAC.
Turner hit for 13 points and two assists while Foguth had a solid game with 10 points, 11 boards, and strong defense.
Stull contributed eight points and passed out three assists while Fair had seven points, three boards, and two feeds.
Post Ben Watterson helped in the paint as the junior scored four points. Hall added three points, four boards, and two assists.
CVCA survived a last-second shot attempt off the rim by Streetsboro (6-3) in a 47-45 win on the road Jan. 10. It was the Royals' first non-league win of the year.
Foguth exploded for a season and game-high 23 points in the victory. Foguth also had nine rebounds. Turner netted 10 points.
Stull chipped in five points and six caroms while Fair got five points, and Hall had four.
