Golfers' season ends
The Aurora High boys and girls golf teams bowed out of postseason play recently in their respective sectional tournaments.
The boys placed 11th out of 18 teams in Division I at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna. Aurora's scores were: Jeremy Thorn and James Robinson 83 (tied for 28th place overall), Will Snyder 87, Jack Schroeder 89 and Michael Avalon 91.
Meanwhile, in the Division I sectional at Tamer Win, the AHS girls finished sixth with 397 strokes. Scores for Aurora were: Kenzi Myers 93, Skylar Banbury and Olivia Traci 98, Brittany Griffen 108 and Gia Leone 114.
Hunter heads to state
Aurora resident Josh Hunter, the senior captain of the University School varsity golf team, qualified for the Division I state tournament, which will be Oct. 20-21.
At the district tournament at Pine Hills Golf Club, he shot 74 to qualify as an individual. He has a plus 1.1 handicap, and played in numerous national junior golf tournaments this year.
His Polo golf ranking is No. 6 in Ohio, and he finished in the top 20 at the AJGA Preview at Sugar Valley and AJGA City of London at Crooked Creek. He also finished in the top 10 of the PGA Junior Series tournament at Penn State.
In addition, he was invited and played in the IMG Junior World tournament at Torrey Pines this summer.
Winter sports to start
Harmon School winter sports practices and tryouts will start soon. Girls basketball is Oct. 31, boys basketball Nov. 7 and wrestling Nov. 11.
Students should sign up on final forms, and they must have physicals on file to participate. Information is available in the office and on the school website under "athletics."

tryouts for volleyball
The DG Warriors will conduct girls Junior Olympics volleyball tryouts for the 2017 season at the new Reminderville Athletic Club.
Dates and times are: Oct. 29 -- 10- and 11-year-olds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 12-year-olds from 3 to 5 p.m.; Oct. 30 -- 13-year-olds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 14-year-olds from 3 to 5 p.m.; Nov. 13 -- 15-year-olds from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 16- and 17-year-olds from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
The Reminderville Athletic Club has three regulation-sized hardwood volleyball courts using the latest technology, with the nets lowering from the ceiling with no poles in the floor.

Run results unveiled
Here are some results of Aurora runners in area distance runs recently:
In the Towpath Marathon 10K, Jenna Lovasz placed second in women 20-24 in 48:06.92.
In the half-marathon, Erin Grohe was first in women 19 and under in 1:40:09.26; Stephen Kudley was fifth in men 25-29 in 1:34:31.49; Natalie Seiler was 42nd (2:06:24.19) and Jennifer Shanholtzer was 55th (2:13:37.87) in women 35-39; and Paul Frankmann was second (1:40:12.57), Jim Stepanek was fourth (1:42:51.94), Bob Marchese was 11th (1:49:49) and Tom Dockman was 38th (2:18:11.72) in men 50-54.
In the Monster Mutt Dash, Chris Vaca placed third in males with a mutt in 21:52.7.

Distance runs continue this weekend in the region.
On Oct. 22 are the Bay Village Heritage 5K at Cahoon Memorial Park, the Scarecrow Scurry 5K at Edgewater Park in Cleveland and the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry's Trek for Teens in Cleveland.
On Oct. 23 are Marco's 5K for Kids at Emerald Necklace Marina in Lakewood and Edwin's Run for Re-entry at Shaker Square in Cleveland.

Darko tourney champ
Darko, which finished third in the regular season standings, won the Aurora Parks-Rec Department fall men's adult softball league tournament last week.
Darko beat Great Lakes Valet 7-0 in the final game. In the semifinals, Darko beat T.J. Service Center (Carriage Windows), the regular season champion, 29-21 and Great Lakes Valet beat T.J. Service Center 14-4.
The fall adult coed league tournament is scheduled to wind up Oct. 21.
Hunting dates listed
Ohio's fall turkey hunting season is under way through Nov. 27, while deer archery season runs until Feb. 7, 2017. The youth deer gun season is Nov. 19-20, regular deer gun season is Nov. 28-Dec. 4 and the muzzleloader season is Jan. 7-10, 2017. Squirrel season runs until Jan. 31, 2017 and rabbit season runs from Nov. 4 to Feb. 28, 2017.
Grid squads advance
Three Aurora teams have advanced to the semifinals in the Western Reserve Youth Football League playoffs.
In the Varsity Gray division, Aurora White will face Kenston Red on Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. at Chagrin Falls. White beat Streetsboro Blue 20-0.
In the Varsity White division, Aurora Gold will face Mayfield White on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. at Chesterland. Gold defeated Nordonia Green 20-0.
In the Junior Varsity Gray division, Aurora Green will battle Kenston White on Oct. 23 at 11:30 a.m. at Chagrin Falls. Green beat Nordonia White 21-8.
Aurora Green was eliminated from further Varsity Scarlet division play after a 35-19 loss to Twinsburg White.
KSU loses fifth game
Kent State University's football team dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference East Division on Oct. 15 after an 18-14 loss to Miami of Ohio. It was the Red Hawks' first victory of the season in seven games. The Golden Flashes will host Ohio University on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
Jenior loses to Stone
In the Nothern Ohio PGA's Denny Shute Math Play Tournament recently, Mike Stone of Belmont Country Club in Toledo won the apprentice division title over Barrington Golf Club's Katie Jenior.
M. Camp is top senior
Club Walden's Mitch Camp was tops in the Titleist senior Ohio Cup player point standings, while he finished second to Brookside Golf Club's Gary Robison in the Omega senior player of the year standings. Auroa's Gary Trivisonno was fourth on both lists. Camp also finished third on the Club Car money list with $10,843, while Trivisonno was eighth with $6,825.
