Winning record in the Suburban League? Check.

The Nordonia High School girls tennis team finished the regular season recently with a flurry of matches, winning three of four contests.

As a result, the Lady Knights ended up 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the National Conference of the Suburban League.

The 15 victories ties a school record for most wins in a single season. If Nordonia can pick up another match, the Lady Knights might be able to set a new mark.

On Sept. 19, Nordonia dropped its only match of the stretch, losing 5-0 to Suburban League National Conference foe Wadsworth on the road. Consequently, the Lady Knights finished in fourth place in the conference's regular season standings.

Two days later, Nordonia battled non-conference opponent Canton GlenOak at home, blanking the Lady Golden Eagles by a 5-0 margin.

"Four of the five matches went five sets," said Nordonia head coach Ryan Vehar. "In three of them, we actually lost the first set and then came back to win the next two. It's been a while since I've seen that happen as a coach."

Nordonia junior Jackie Wendel won at first singles by the score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Sophomore Helena Marcic was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 margin at second singles. Sophomore Arianna Pearson prevailed at third singles by the score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Both of Nordonia's doubles units were also victorious, starting with the first doubles squad of seniors Rachel Kopniske and Kourtney DelGiudice. They won by the score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The second doubles tandem of seniors Alyssa Sansavera and Becca Cermak was responsible for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph.

On Sept. 22, Nordonia hosted non-conference opponent Crestwood, winning 4-1. Wendel won 6-4, 6-1 at first singles, while Pearson posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles. The first doubles team of Kopniske and DelGiudice and the second doubles unit of Sansavera and Cermak claimed victory by the same score: 6-0, 6-1.

On Sept. 21, Nordonia competed in the Suburban League Tournament at Medina Highland.

The Lady Knights finished tied for fifth in the tournament with North Royalton and were only a half-point out of fourth place. Nordonia's performance during the regular season, plus their showing at the league tournament, means that the Lady Knights finished fifth overall in the final league standings.

"Helena Marcic was able to finish fourth at second singles," said Vehar. "She played well against the top player in that group. Second doubles went three sets and lost in a third set tiebreaker. They ended up fourth. It's still the best we've ever finished at the Suburban League Tournament."

On Sept. 26, Nordonia hosted non-conference foe Baberton in what was Senior Night for the Lady Knights. They celebrated by shutting out the Magics 5-0.

Wendel prevailed at first singles 7-5, 6-4 and Marcic was a 6-3, 6-4 victor at second singles. In addition, senior Missy Bleich contributed a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles.

Nordonia's doubles teams were also victorious. Kopniske and DelGiudice posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at first doubles, while Sansavera and Cermak won 6-2, 6-1 at second doubles.

Up next for Nordonia is the Division I Sectional Meet Oct. 5, at Springside Raquet Club in Medina.

"We have some girls with talent who can hopefully go a little further [in the postseason] than we have in years past," said Vehar. "There are going to be a lot of good teams from our area there."
