It's safe to say the Hudson girls tennis team didn't mind switching to the new Suburban League.

It's also safe to say that after two years, the Lady Explorers own the Suburban League National Conference.

Hudson captured its second consecutive National Conference title at the Suburban League Tournament Sept. 24 at Highland High School in Medina.

The Lady Explorers finished with 39 points. Wadsworth placed second out of eight teams with 33 points and Brecksville-Broadview Heights took third with 30 points.

Hudson, which finished 7-0 against National Conference opponents during the regular season, also won the overall title with 16 points.

The Lady Bees (6-1) and the Lady Grizzlies (5-2) finished in a tie for second with 13 points.

The Lady Explorers won five of the six flights and 14 of their 15 matches.

Yes, this new Suburban League has been made for Hudson thus far.

"Every year, you play to win the conference," Lady Explorers head coach Tim Morgan said. "All of our girls were happy for each other. They found joy in each other's victories."

Hudson's top player was just about invincible during the tournament.

Senior Molly Sandberg, who finished third at the 2015 Division I state tournament, won all three of her matches to claim the first singles' title.

She earned 6-0, 6-0 victories over Stow-Munroe Falls' Samantha Heid, Wadsworth's Rylee O'Brien and Cuyahoga Falls' Cora Shane to improve to 24-0 in 2016. Sandberg has a 65-1 record since she joined the Lady Explorers last year.

"Molly is playing well," Morgan said. "She was the class of the field. She has great athleticism to go along with her ability to serve well, play well from the baseline and play well from the net."

Senior Grace Graham won the second singles' title.

She posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Stow's Lexi Ostrander in the quarterfinals, a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Nordonia's Helena Marcic in the semifinals and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wadsworth's Gabriella Heideman 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

"I thought Grace played some of her better tennis [Sept. 24] in terms of her shot-making," Morgan said. "She hit her forehand well and she made better decisions. She hit the right spots to the right areas. She played well in the front court and the back court, especially in the last match."

Senior Isabelle Mawby made it a clean sweep in singles' play by winning the third singles' championship.

She defeated Cuyahoga Falls' Maddie McBryer 6-2, 6-3, Twinsburg's Elissa Schaffner 6-0, 6-1 and Wadsworth's Brenna Murphy 6-4, 6-1.

"Isabelle is very steady," Morgan said. "She is very consistent in her shots. She ran the court well. She pursued a lot of balls and hit some strong serves."

Hudson's doubles team of junior Madeline Elliott and senior Istabraq Dalieh won the second doubles' title.

They defeated Twinsburg's Hannah Banas and Anrutha Yarlagadda 6-2, 6-1, Nordonia's Becca Cermak and Alyssa Sansavera 6-1, 6-2 and Wadsworth's Erin Murphy and Reilly Klatka 7-6, 1-6, 6-3.

"Istabraq and Madeline beat that same Wadsworth team in three sets [earlier in the season]," Morgan said. "Madeline does well from the baseline. She sets up Istabraq at the net. Istabraq adds a little power. She serves well and does a good job of finishing shots at the net."

The Lady Explorers' first doubles team of junior Jenny Gan and sophomore Susie Fan placed second.

They beat Falls' Kennedy McBryer and Sam Booker 6-0, 6-0 and Twinsburg's Katie Sterling and Anishka Singh 6-3, 6-3. They lost to Brecksville's Abby Richardson and Alana Thomas 6-3, 7-6 in the final.

"Jenny and Susie had beaten that same Brecksville team [earlier in the season]," Morgan said. "They got down 5-0 in the first set. They were ahead most of the second set, but they didn't finish the match.

"It wasn't disappointing. Brecksville just played better. Jenny and Susie have done well together all year."

Host Hudson fell to 12-7 on the season after losing to Magnificat (Rocky River) 4-1 Sept. 22.

Sandberg was the Lady Explorers' lone winner. She earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Hudson was scheduled to visit North Canton Hoover in an Ohio Tennis Coaches Association match Sept. 27. Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Explorers are set to play in a Division I sectional tournament Oct. 5 at Springside Racquet & Fitness Club in Akron. Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Morgan said Sandberg, Mawby and Fan will play singles and the doubles teams will be the duo of Graham and Gan and the tandem of Elliott and Dalieh.
