Aurora -- With an emphasis on the short game, Aurora High's boys golf team is making strides as it nears postseason play.
"We went 3-1 in the last week to improve our record [to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the Suburban League American Conference]," said head coach Dave Munson.
The locals fielded two teams in the Aurora Invitational on Sept. 25 at Barrington. One team placed fifth with 351 strokes and one was 11th with 399.
For the AHS green team, scores were: Michael Avalon and Will Snyder 87, Jeremy Thorn 88, Jack Schroeder 89 and James Robinson 93.
For the AHS white team, scores were: Matthew Maselli and Spencer Harris 99, Jonathan Kokinchak 100, Brandon Schambach 101 and Will Baldwin 105.
University School and Western Reserve Academy were one-two in the 11-team tournament.
The Greenmen beat Tallmadge 185-198 in league action Sept. 22 on the front nine at Club Walden.
Schroeder was medalist with a 42, while Avalon shot 43. Tallmadge was led by a pair of 48s by Noah Bowser and Austin Moore.
Munson was pleased with the play of Schroeder and Avalon. Maselli and Harris each added 50s in the win.
The Greenmen were scheduled to wrap up the regular season Sept. 26 at league foe Revere in a makeup test.
Meanwhile, Munson is prepping his team for the Suburban League postseason tourney Sept. 29 at Good Park in Akron, plus the Division I sectional Oct. 5 at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna.
Aurora also lost to Orange 164-172 and beat Berkshire (186) on the front nine at the Country Club last week.
"Thorn and Avalon led us with 41s," noted the coach, "while Schroeder  and Harris  also scored."
"Our guys are continuing to work hard to improve their games," said Munson. "As always, we're emphasizing the short game and putting. We look forward to the upcoming tournaments."
AHS beat Shaker Heights 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 in a match-play event Sept. 20 at Club Walden. Earning full points were Thorn, Robinson and Maselli, with Avalon notching a half point.
