The Nordonia High School boys soccer team's toughest opponent so far during the 2016 season has been Mother Nature.

Two of the Knights' first three matches have been postponed due to inclement weather conditions, as a flurry of strong summer storms have swept through Northeast Ohio in recent weeks.

Nordonia was scheduled to kick off the 2016 campaign Aug. 19, against Bedford at home. The Knights were then slated to visit Kenston Aug. 23 and Warren Harding Aug. 25.

To this point, Nordonia has only played one contest, the match against Kenston.

The varsity match was a close contest, as the Bombers pulled out a 2-1 victory. Kenston also won the junior varsity match by blanking the Knights by a 4-0 margin.

The varsity contest was a defensive struggle, as neither team was able to score in the first half. Kenston broke the scoreless tie on a goal by sophomore Tim Shindika with 15:43 remaining in the second half.

Exactly three minutes later, the Bombers scored again. This time, senior Dom Bartolone provided the goal.

Down 2-0, Nordonia tallied its lone goal of the contest with about two minutes left in the half. Sophomore Shawn Uguccini accounted for the Knights' score.

According to Nordonia head coach Jason Stepp, his team played well. However, the Knights were not able to take full advantage of their offensive opportunities.

"Although we controlled a lot of the game, Kenston defensively kept us out of their one-third of the field," said Stepp.

Senior Connor Kaminicki registered six saves in goal for Nordonia. Kenston goalkeeper Kyle McAbier produced three saves. As far as corner kicks were concerned, the Bombers had six and the Knights had five.

Nordonia was set to open its conference schedule Aug. 30 at home against Hudson, but results were not available at press time. Both the Knights and the Explorers are part of the National Conference of the Suburban League.

On Sept. 1, Nordonia will hit the road again, this time traveling to non-conference opponent Barberton at 7 p.m.
